The ISO 14001 standard provides a universal framework for implementing an Environmental Management System. It is widely accepted in many sectors including manufacturing, mining, financial services and government. Its adoption in Australian agriculture has been tentative and subject to a great deal of variation and interpretation within different industry sectors and on farm.

One of the challenges in raising the standard of EMS implementation under the ISO 14001 framework is communication across a diversity of stakeholders. The Internet as a communication tool provides a significant opportunity to raise awareness about EMS and provide information resources for EMS participants. Communication via electronic networks depends on the implementation and adoption of international standards and protocols.

This paper will explore the parallels between EMS implementation and the diversity in the ways in which electronic media is used to communicate EMS.
